Excerpt from "A Teenage Opera"

Count the days into years
His eighty-two brings many fears
Yesterday's laughter turned to tears

His arms and legs don't feel so strong
His heart is weak, there's something wrong
Opens windows in despair
Tries to breathe in some fresh air
His conscience cries: 'Get on your feet
Without you, Jack, the town can't eat'

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Go into town, don't let them down, oh no, no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Go into town, don't let them down, oh no, no

The people that live in the town
Don't understand
He's never been known to miss his round

'It's ten o'clock', the housewives yell
'When Jack turns up, we'll give him hell'
Husbands moan at breakfast tables
No milk, no eggs, no marmalade labels
Mothers send their children out
To Jack's house, to scream and shout

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Come into town, don't let us down, oh no, oh no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Come into town, don't let us down, oh no, oh no

A Sunday morning, bright and clear
Lovely flowers
Decorate a marble square

People cry and walk away
Think about the fateful day
Now they wish they'd given Jack
More affection and respect
The little children, dressed in black
Don't know what happened to old Jack

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no, oh no?
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no, oh no?

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no, oh no?

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no, oh no?
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no, oh no?

Tell Me

Tell me everything
Don't be afraid to give yourself away
Sometimes, it's easier
Your fears melt away
And turn it all to moonshine
Words that rhyme
Still in your mind
Still in your mind

Play me anything
Maybe music is the only way
to tell me how you feel
Somehow, you'll find the way
And all the words to your song
Will carry on
Still in your mind
Still in your mind

Forsaken Gardens

Where are all the joys of yesterday?
Where, now, is the happiness and laughter that we shared?
Gone, like our childhood dreams, aspirations and beliefs;
time is a thief, and he ravages our gardens,
stripping saplings, felling trees,
trampling on the flowers, sucking sap and drying seeds.
In the midnight candle-light of experience
all colour fades, green fingers grey.

Time, alone, shall murder all the flowers,
still, there's time to share our plots and all that we call 'ours'.
How much worse, then, if we all deny each others' needs
and keep our gardens privately?

It’s getting colder, wind and rain leave gashes;
looking back, I only see the friends I've lost.
Fires smoulder, raking through the ashes
my hands are dirty, my mind is numb,
I count the cost of 'I':
'I need to get on, I've got to tend my garden;
got to shut you out, no time to crave your pardon now'.

Now I see the garden that I've grown is
just the same as those outside;
the fences that, erected to protect, simply divide....
There's ruination everywhere,
the weather has played havoc with the grass...
does anyone believe his garden's really going to last?
In the time allotted us, can any man keep miserly his own?
Is there any pleasure in a solitary growth?

Come and see my garden if you will,
I'd like someone to see it all before each root is killed.
Surely now it’s time to open up each life to all,
tear down the walls, if it's not too late!

There is so much sorrow in the world,
there is so much emptiness and heartbreak and pain.
Somewhere on the road we have all taken a wrong turn...
how can we build the right path again?

Through the grief, through the pain,
our flowers need each other's rain....

Kill Yourself

Loud voices direct dissection of earthly bound flesh
Caught in a web of racely uncommited restrictions
Entropy bringing down empires to its knees
Desperate means to avoid eternal freeze
Wired up to survive until the twilight of time
Comes crashing down

And frees us from ourselves
One last chance to prove a worth before
Going under a glance of death
Welcoming consciousness to be set free

Emma's theme

Once I lived in darkness, out there on my own.
Lived to brave the world alone.
Everything seemed hopeless. No chance to break free.
Couldn't hear the song inside of me.
Once upon a time a song inspired them – be brave.
They gave me up because my fate was as the one who'd save,
The world from your dark magic and the wicked things you do.
They placed a song inside my heart more powerful than you.
All the years of running – no not anymore.
I know what I'm living for.
I'm no longer searching.
Turns out all along, the answer was inside me – with a song.
